ULEB SUPPORTS DECLARATION ON SPORTS ADOPTED AT EUROPEAN COUNCIL IN NICE

ULEB is pleased to announce its support of the declaration on sports adopted at the European Council in Nice last week on the specifics of sport and its social function. The declaration clearly defines an organizational model based on the key role played by sports federations. Such sports federations need bear in mind the rules of participative democracy concerning issues of European cultural and social diversity, as well as those concerning issues intrinsic to professional sports management.

As the European professional leagues´ association representing the top national championships, ULEB takes this opportunity to publicly declare its availability to give shape to the statement made by the European Council and to collaborate in the objectives of going beyond the existing barriers and of enhancing the political role of the European Union. The ULEB makes itself available to Commissioner Reding, Commissioner Monti and the national ministers of sport for European Union countries to cooperate in such an important task.
