The History of
Club Deportivo Baskonia
Club Deportivo Baskonia founded its basketball section in 1959.
The team from Vitoria went up to Spanish highest category in 1971-72 season and it has remained in the ACB League since its foundation in 1983.
In 1985 Baskonia made their debut in the European Competition, and it was two years later that TAU CERAMICA firm arrived as official sponsor.
Baskonia was born in 1959 as a section of basketball, inside a football Club with the same name. Until 1968-69 Season they played in provincial category; that year they promoted up to Third Division. Next Season (1969-70) they got promotion to Second Division, and since 1971-72 Season they play in the First level of the Spanish basketball.
The Club has participated in competitions with three different names: C.D.Baskonia (since 1959 until 1983), Caja Alava (since 1984 until 1986) and Taugres / TAU Ceramica (since 1987).
For Spanish basketball, Baskonia-TAU Ceramica is a reference not only at as a sportive level, but as the managerial as well. We have played all the Play Off for the title, and so we played an ACB final and three King Cup finals, getting the championship in seasons 1995-96 and 1998-99.
We have been playing in European competitions for the last eight seasons with a result of: 125 international matches, more than 110,000 Kms. travelled and 22 European and Asian countries visited.
After having played three Eurocup finals, we eventually got the "Eurocup Championship" in Vitoria on 12/03/96 versus Paok. We also had a recent experience in European League. Therefore, our team is placed among the best ones in Europe.
Furthermore, continuos work training in our four young teams gave us the chance to be Spanish champions in 1991 and 1994.
