The History of
Cibona

The Club was founded in 1946 as BC "SLOBODA" (Croatian word for freedom). At the beginning Club changed names very often (Sloboda, SD Zagreb, Vihor, Polet) until it become Lokomotiva in 1950. Under that name they played until Novembert 1975 when they got a new sponsor "CIBONA", a food-company corporation which was composed of "Kras", "Franck", "Badel" and "Voce".

The Club competed in the First Division from 1951, with the only exptions in 1952 and 1960. The golden age of the club was between 1980 and 1987 when two legends of the Croatian and World basketball, Kresimir Cosic and Drazen Petrovic, played for Cibona. In that period they won a total of 14 trophies, together with the two most precious-titles of European Club Champions in 1985 and 1986.

Cibona has qualified for the European Club competitions in each season since 1977, with the only exeption in 1989/90. It sounds really impresive that Cibona is the only team to always participate in the European Championships for Club (from 1991/92 to this year Euroleague).

Cibona is the most successful Croatian basketball club, having won 28 major trophies.

This season "Cibona Vip" was in ¼ finale Euroleague when was stoped by Panathinaikos European Champion for season 1999/00 and for the 9th times become National Championship.

Cibona has participated in the European Championship for Clubs 12 tiems, in Cup Winner's Cup 6 times, and in Korac Cup 7 times. In 25 seasons in the European club competition Cibona played in 318 games, of which they had 193 wins and 124 defeats, with 1 game draw.
