The History of
FC Barcelona

The basketball division was founded 24 August 1926. It is the club's most important division in terms of social and sports outreach. The Sol de Baix sporting complex, located between the Avenida de Madrid and the Travessara de les Corts, houses the court where Barca basketball first began. After the Civil War in Spain, the basketball team began to compete in the new courts located near the south playing field at Les Corts. During the forties, Barcelona FC played in the first division and late forties became one of the team's best periods. The team has now reached the highest levels of national basketball.

In 1958/59 the team won the Liga Espanola, and the Copa del Generalissimo, but neither of these successes could stop the team's subsequent decline and that year marked a breaking point for the section that would last for some time. The inauguration of the Palau Blaugrana stadium in 1971 gave new impetus to the section, but titles were not forthcoming. At that time, Real Madrid was the most powerful team. In the 1977/78 season the team was able to tumble the RM Blancos in the final of the Copa del Rey. The victory proved to be the start of some of the best years in Barca basketball history. After 22 years of disappointment, Barcelona returned to capture the title, and they were back the next year to repeat the conquest.

Their first success on the international scene came during the 1984/85 campaign when they overpowered the Zalguiris Kaunas in the Recopa final. The next season they became twice champions by overcoming Scavolini de Pesaro. The 1980's were years of glory when the team achieved 5 League championships, 2 Recopas, 1 Copa Korac, 6 Copa del Rey, 6 Ligas Catalanas and 1 Copa Principe de Asturias.

In recent years, Barcelona has continued the trophy-hunt, and has achieved some major wins: 4 League Cups, 2 Copa del Rey and 1 Copa Korac. The only trophy missing from the Barcelona shelf is the European League. The team has lost the League final five times, and it is the last remaining title that would top off the brilliant record of Barcelona basketball.
